Can Synthetic Wigs Be Curled?

Different color synthetic wigs on the wall.

Wearing a synthetic wig can make you feel a lot more confident and it’s great if you want to try different hairstyles and colors. Synthetic wigs come in many different lengths, textures, colors, and styles. But you can change things up if you like and curl your hair if you want a curly hairstyle.

Just like you have to take care of your natural hair or risk damaging it, you must take care of your synthetic wig or you’ll ruin it. If you want to have gorgeous curls but don’t want to do something that could potentially damage your wig, I’ve got you covered!

It is possible to curl your synthetic wig, but you must never, ever, ever use hot tools like a curling iron unless the wig can handle heat. There are some wigs that can tolerate the heat, but if you want to use one, be sure to never do so at high temperatures.

If you’re unsure about whether your wig can be curled with heating tools, you should use foam rollers to be safe. In this article, I’ll tell you exactly how you can curl your synthetic wig and look stunning in no time without damaging it.

What Are Synthetic Wigs Made From?

Quickly, before I tell you exactly how to curl your synthetic wig like a pro, let’s look at what they’re made of. It’s important to know this so you don’t think you can use a heating tool if you’re in a pinch.

These wigs are made of materials that can’t handle the heat, such as PVC, acrylic, silicone, vinyl, and silk. Heat them too much and you’ll have a ruined wig on your hands.

Curling Your Synthetic Wig

Okay, let’s get into why you’re here: to find out how to curl your synthetic wig safely!

Using Rollers

Rollers are the easiest and safest way to create lovely curls without applying damaging heat to the hair.

Before starting, you have to wet the hair completely. Then, gently comb through it using a wide-toothed wig comb.

Place a roller at the end of a strand of hair and wind your hair around it. You have to roll the roller and hair toward the base of your wig. Repeat this until you have all your hair curled into the rollers. Keep the rollers secure with roller clips.

Using a fabric steamer, go over each curl to ensure that they will be curled as they should. Let the hair fully air dry before you take out the rollers.

Using a Heat Tool

If your wig is able to handle heat, you can use a curling iron at a lower temperature than you’d use normally. Make sure that you check your wig for information on whether or not it has been manufactured to deal with heat.

Before starting, do a heat test just to be safe. Do this on a part of the hair that is less visible, such as the base of the hair. Apply heat for up to 10 seconds and see if the hair is undamaged.

If you’re satisfied, you can start to curl the hair as you desire. Start with very low heat that is just able to create a beautiful curl. Curl each section for about 10 seconds.

Apply Hairspray

Applying hairspray to your hair is a good way to prevent heat damage, especially if you plan to use a curling iron. Hairspray can also make it easier for the curls to take shape, so you don’t have to keep recurring.

However, it’s important that you use the right kind of hairspray. You can’t just use any hairspray, so buy a product that is made for synthetic hair wigs.

Benefits of Synthetic Hair Wigs

There are actually many benefits to synthetic hair, which is why they’re so popular. Without waxing poetic about them too much, I’ll just mention two of the benefits so you can appreciate them as much as I do.

Retains Style for Longer

Synthetic hair is able to retain hairstyles for much longer than our natural hair can. This is because the fibers used to make them are great at keeping form even after they’re washed. Also, it takes minimal effort to maintain hairstyles for the same reason.

With that said, though, it can be tricky to restyle the hair because it’s so good at retaining its shape.

More Affordable

Human hair wigs can be really expensive. Synthetic wigs, on the other hand, are a lot less pricey. However, this doesn’t mean that these wigs are inferior. Nowadays, they can look just as good as wigs made of natural hair and people won’t even notice that it’s not your hair.

There you go – the best way to curl synthetic wigs without causing damage. It really is as simple as that!
