I uploaded a photo of my usual work outfit and asked AI to tell me, honestly, what was holding it back. The answer came back fast: my shoes.
The outfit itself was fine — a tailored camel trouser, a white poplin shirt, a good belt. But I was wearing square-toe block heels in a shiny patent finish, and AI flagged them immediately. Not because block heels are wrong, but because the plastic-looking shine read as cheap against the matte fabrics above.
The shoe finish matters more than the shoe style — a matte or slightly burnished leather reads expensive even at a $60 price point, while high-gloss patent on a block heel can undercut a $400 outfit.
AI suggested swapping to a low-heeled mule or a pointed kitten heel in a matte tan leather or warm cognac. Nothing dramatic. The point was to match the finish of the shoe to the vibe of the fabric — matte clothes, matte shoes.
It also noted that when the shoe color pulls from somewhere already in the outfit, the whole look reads as more considered. Cognac near camel, ivory near cream, chocolate near charcoal. Simple logic, but easy to ignore when you’re just grabbing what’s comfortable.
The fix here costs nothing if you already own a matte leather shoe in a neutral. Pull it out, hold it next to your go-to work outfit, and check whether the finish matches the mood of the fabrics. If everything above the ankle is matte and the shoe is glossy plastic, that one detail is doing more damage than you’d expect.
