Multiple portrait of men in various fashion styles.

Men’s fashion has gone through a lot of changes throughout history. Once, it was pretty common for men to wear loincloths and not much else. At another time in history, men wore tights. Fashion evolves over time as new styles become popular and new clothing technologies are made available. How many different types of fashion styles for men have you worn…and which ones will you want to try wearing in the future?

Below is an epic list of men’s styles with a photo example of each showcasing nice outfits for guys for each respective style.

Table of Contents

Men’s Fashion History

Clothing can be a symbol of status and wealth. Even in the earliest days, cavemen noticed who had the nicest animal pelts wrapped around them. The guy with the nicer pelt was more successful at his job — which, in those days was hunting and gathering — and commanded more respect around the cave. Men’s fashion has been used to stand out and to blend in. During the days of ancient Rome, men wore togas that were basically just fabric draped around their bodies.

Fashion always has some meaning, some message. What messages are you sending with your clothes? What does your style say about you?

Types of fashion styles

Different men’s fashion styles have existed for a long time. Throughout history, different looks have become popular and then faded away so that new trends could come along. All of these different styles have their own inspirations and meanings, their own messages. All of these styles have their own stories. Which of them will speak to you the most?

Artsy

Man in red suit sitting on a bench outdoors.

The artsy look is all about being a little unique, thinking outside the box. This style is used to make a statement, tell the world a little something about who you are. This is a bold, colorful, vibrant style. Experiment and get creative. The artsy style is all about personal self-expression, so use your style to let your inner light shine.

Athleisure

Man in an athleisure look walks the runway.

The athleisure look is everywhere. This is definitely one of the trendiest styles you can possibly wear. All the hottest designers and most fashion-forward celebrities have embraced the athleisure look, which is all about wearing athletic clothing.

What you need

This is the clothing you’d wear to go exercise, though instead of exercising you’re showing off your style. Tracksuits, sweat pants, sneakers, T-shirts, tank tops…well, you know what athletic clothing looks like!

Get stylish

Add some accessories to make your athleisure truly fashionable. A baseball cap and a sports watch will truly complete this look.

Beach bum

Man sitting on a wooden lounger near the beach.

The beach bum look is very simple. It’s sort of a departure from style because it’s a look that’s all about comfort rather than looks. Bright, bold prints like Hawaiian shirt designs, neon colors, and beachy motifs are just right. Shorts, button-up shirts, tank tops, and sandals will give you a beach bum look every time.

Don’t forget your sunglasses, waterproof watch and general laid-back attitude.

Beatnik

Black and white photo of two men wearing black sweaters.

The beatniks were the rebellious young thinkers of the 1950s. Part of the Beat Generation, beatniks followed writers like Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg, dressed in black clothing and used style to show their anti-establishment values. This is an iconic look that was once the height of style. Now, the beatnik look is a classic.

Get the look

The beatniks weren’t just rebellious youth, they were intellectuals. They talked about poetry and literature and they rejected the men’s fashion norms of the day by dressing in plain, form-fitting black clothing. Turtlenecks, skinny capri pants and straight-leg  pants, all in black, help define this style. To really get the look, add a goatee and an attitude that you are deeply, deeply in thought.

Biker

Bearded man in leather jacket sitting on his bike.

Henry Winkler as the Fonz. John Travolta as Danny Zucco. James Dean as…well, James Dean. The biker look is an iconic part of men’s fashion that instantly tells the world you’re a bit of a bad boy. And it seems to pretty much drive women wild. Luckily, it doesn’t take a lot of pieces to create a good-looking biker style. Just remember the essential accessory: a heart of gold hidden by that bad boy persona.

What you need

The essential item for any biker wardrobe is, of course, the leather jacket. The classic biker jacket is usually waist-length and often has many zippers on them to add extra coolness. Gentleman’s Journal recommends a full-grain leather jacket.

Jeans and leather pants are the bottoms of choice for many biker-style wearers. Of course, you’ll need classic motorcycle boots. Channel your inner James Dean and finish the look with a standard white T, or wear a graphic T to express your personality.

Black tie

Man in his tuxedo sitting on a classy couch.

Fancy evening events may have a black tie dress code. This is a fashion style reserved for fancy events and you’ll usually see it at important ceremonies, weddings, big anniversary parties and other gala events. This is a very specific dress code and it only takes one mistake to appear overdressed or underdressed at any black tie event.

What you need

A jacket with silk lapels is a must for black-tie attire. The jacket may have a notched lapel, a shawl lapel, or a peak lapel, so long as the lapels are silk. Wear the jacket with tuxedo pants and a tie. Any tie will do, from a standard necktie to a bowtie to an ascot. You can wear a dress shirt or a tuxedo shirt.

A black tie does not have to be black. You can actually wear a jacket ad pants in any color and the tie itself can be in any color, too, according to GQ.

Get the style

Finish your black tie look with a dress watch, cufflinks and a pocket square to set off the ensemble. Style your hair to make it look neat.

Bohemian

Man in bohemian clothes poses with guitar in his hands.

The bohemian look, or boho, is all about being a little bit outside the box. This style is a little bit quirky and so are you…and that’s okay.

What you need

Boho style is sort of artistic and free-flowing. Bold colors and patterns are a strong feature of this fashion style. Light-colored ripped blue jeans and light-colored slacks, especially pleated trousers, are often seen in the boho look. Colorful button-down shirts and loose V-neck T-shirts are a perfect match. Wear loafers and low-cut shoes without socks and when you’re feeling bold, add a hat with a floppy brim to complete your bohemian style.

Bro

Bearded man wearing a checkered long sleeves polo.

Being a bro is actually an entire lifestyle that involves a lot of sports, hanging with other bros and, seemingly, eating a ton of wings. But there is also a distinct fashion at play when it comes to bro style. Do you know how to capture this look for yourself?

Get the look

Sports gear, including jerseys, is a big part of bro fashion. Hoodies, oversized jeans, shorts and T-shirts are staples of bro fashion. The classic baseball cap is a must, according to GQ.

Business casual

A group of coworkers walking down the office stairs.

Once, it was easy. All you have to do is watch 1940s and 1950s movies and TV shows to know that there was a time when pretty much all guys wore a suit and tie to work. That really made things simple. However, it also made things uncomfortable. In more modern men’s fashion, men have more options.

Business casual has become a more relaxed and yet still professional style. So…how can you walk this line between too casual and too businessy?

What you need

Jeans are too casual and a suit is too formal, according to the Modest Man. Business casual style is about finding the middle ground. Any collared shirt, including polo shirts, is generally acceptable. Dress boots and shoes are fine, including more casual shoes like loafers (but not sneakers).

You don’t need a tie and you don’t have to wear a blazer, but you can add one to sharpen up your look a bit. Slacks, including khakis, are totally fine. However, you should avoid super casual looks like cargo pants.

Business formal

Two businessmen having discussion on the second-level balcony.

If you’re dressing in business formal attire, you need to look snappy. This is attire that is suitable for a very dressy evening event. That means you need to wear a dark suit and a dress shirt with a silk tie.

A notched lapel suit is appropriate for business formal attire. The notch lapel differs from the peaked lapel suit jacket, which is used in formal wear. Add cufflinks and a pocket square to complete the look. It’s the little details that really matter in business formal style.

Casual

Man in casual outfit and shades sitting outside his house.

Dressing in a casual style outfit does not mean looking sloppy. This isn’t wearing your pajama bottoms out of the house. You can dress to be comfortable and casual and still be stylish.  There is plenty of stylish casual wear for men ranging many different men’s styles incorporating many men’s outfits.

What you need

Jeans, polo shirts, T-shirts, and casual slacks like cargo pants and chinos are a perfect way to capture casual style. Hoodies, shorts, and knits work fine, too. Feel free to wear your sneakers, topsiders, and shoes without socks.

A white sneaker can really pop against a casual outfit. Capture a stylish and carefree look with suede loafers, a button-down shirt, and dark jeans, as recommended by Luxe Digital. A good casual outfit will help you look stylish anywhere you go.

Chav

Man wearing black tracksuit, white sneakers, and a matching cap.

To successfully capture the chav style, you’re going to need some name-brand tracksuits, white sneakers and a cap to top it all off. And if you’re going to truly be legit and sport this style, you need some jewelry. A flashy watch, a neck chain, maybe a medallion, anything that will catch the eye will do for this men’s fashion trend.

What is it?

This outfit style originated in England in the late 1990s, a style trend that quickly caught flame and became trendy all over the UK. This style is still around and it definitely isn’t going anywhere soon. The chav look is like a designer version of the athleisure look…and it’s perfect for just hanging out and looking good.

Classic

Man in classic suit and glasses sitting on a vintage chair.

A classic style is built around those looks that will never fall out of fashion. It’s the essential elements that create a truly timeless look that’s not exactly trendy but also not dated or retro. And if that sounds really vague and confusing, you’re not alone. Many have trouble capturing a great classic style. Focus on some essential wardrobe staples and you will be able to successfully capture this look.

What you need

A black suit is truly a classic look. The basic black suit isn’t ever going to be out of style and it very rarely looks out of place. Make sure you maintain at least one well-tailored black suit and you’ll have a style for just about any possible occasion. Wear it with a white button-down shirt and a solid tie and you will have an outfit that is stylish and elegant.

Nothing is quite as classic as a pair of jeans. This is a modern fashion staple that everyone needs. No matter which fit you like best, from skinny to boot cut to wide leg, keep a pair of jeans that fit well handy. You can pair this with a light blue button-up, a T-shirt, a pullover sweater, or a polo. All of these options create a classic look.

A couple of pairs of nice-sitting slacks in khaki, like chinos, will take you far. You can wear these for all sorts of occasions and to fit into all sorts of dress codes. Simple, well-fitting slacks are definitely a wardrobe classic.

Complete your classic wardrobe with some essential accessories and shoes like oxfords and loafers. You may want a couple of nice watches to go with your look. Remember, less is more. Choose watches that are elegant and simple in design, choosing something well-made over what’s flashy. When you focus on quality, this will stand out far more than any watch that’s made for the bling factor.

Cocktail attire

man in a black business suit sitting on a white chair

You will see cocktail attire listed on invitations as a dress code…but what does this mean? Usually, wearing cocktail attire means wearing a dark suit, a white shirt, shiny dress shoes and a tie. Jeans, khakis and casual pants aren’t really okay.

Creating a style

If you’re sort of bold with your fashion, you can always try wearing a more colorful shirt. However, don’t pick anything too loud or bright, especially if you’re going to a wedding. You don’t want to be too flashy and pull attention away from the wedding party.

If you want your look to be just a little bit more stylish, you can always add a pocket square and a boutonniere. Why not? If you’re dressing in cocktail style it’s usually because you’re at a party, so it’s okay to have a little fun with your fashion.

Country club

Two golf friends greet each other by touching their elbows.

Dressing for the country club can be tricky. Country clubs are designed to be somewhat exclusive, high-end places. However, you’re also probably there to play golf, play tennis, maybe go swimming or sit and have lunch.

People are wearing clothing for athletics but they’re also wearing clothing that’s appropriate for the county club. What makes it even more difficult is that many country clubs have dress codes! So, how do you capture the perfect country club style that’s elegant and practical?

Get the look

Collared shirts are a must at the country club. Polo shirts and button-up shirts are a necessity. Stick to simple colors and neutral tones, rather than flashy or vivid pieces. It’s perfectly fine to wear shorts and slacks but avoid all denim and cargo styles.

Cowboy

Cowboy rests his head against his hand with hat.

Once a true style staple of the male wardrobe, cowboy style fell out of fashion around the mid-1900s but lately, it has had a strong resurgence. Cowboy hats, boots, and jeans have never left the fashion scene entirely and they’re still frequently seen at county fairs but now, the cowboy look has become much more chic. How can you make this time-honored fashion style look great on you?

What to wear

The jacket is the key to fashionable cowboy style, according to Fashion Beans. Slip into a snakeskin jacket or a suede jacket to really make this look pop. Under it, you’ll want a Western-style shirt.

This means the shirt will have a yoke, which means it will be made in a pattern that provides structure and support across the back of the shoulders and the front of the chest. Natural and neutral colors allow piping and embroidery to stand out. If you want to look more casual, wear a denim or flannel shirt to create a more rugged look.

Of course, you want to finish the look off with a pair of cowboy boots and a cowboy hat. Feeling bold? Add a great Western string tie.

Cyberpunk

Man donning a matrix style look.

The cyberpunk look is seen often in sci-fi movies that take place in a not-so-distant future or an alternate reality. This is a look that’s someone futuristic. It’s almost totally built around black clothing and involves a lot of shiny vinyl and leather. Long trench coats, black suits and black ties with black sunglasses will help you create an amazing cyberpunk look.

Dark academia

Professor holding a pile of books as he looks over his glasses.

The dark academia look is a style that’s really based on dark literary themes. If the works of Edgar Allen Poe could be translated into men’s fashion, what would that look like? The answer is that it would look a lot like the dark academia style!

What to wear

Think about what a literary professor at a cool college would look like. Whatever you’re thinking is probably a great dark academia style. Tweed blazers, pullover sweaters, cardigans, turtlenecks, loafers, corduroys, and thoughtful expressions are essential to dark academia style. Wool, plaid, and dark colors help create a dark academia look, according to College Fashion.

Disco

Man in a disco outfit with pink shirt and matching wide pants.

The disco look is one of the most recognizable and iconic styles of them all. The 1970s are somewhat infamous for having some really bad fashion. But let’s face it: some of those polyester suits still look amazing. And many of the fashions of the disco era continue to inspire new fashion trends today, according to Love to Know.

Get the look

Polyester and spandex outfit styles were big in the 1970s, both being relatively new fabrics. These materials fit close to the skin and often stretch, which allowed for tight, form-fitting clothing. Flared jeans were especially popular at this time as well, fitting very tightly through the seat and thighs and then flaring out below the knees.

The flares became huge during the 1970s, a style that continues to be present in the fashion scene. To balance out the flared legs, the lapels on shirts and jackets were incredibly wide at this time as well. It was hip to leave button-up shirts partially unbuttoned for casual, tie-less looks.

Bold, bright patterns and vivid colors were big in the 1970s. This is when psychedelic looks became popular. Disco fashion was all about the flash and the style, so bold colors were present. Gold jewelry, including fancy wristwatches and neck chains, were perfect accessories for the disco look.

E-boy

Teenage boy sitting on a city street with his phone and glasses.

The e-boy look, also styled as eboy, appeared pretty recently on Tik Tok and it’s made a big splash on the fashion scene.

Get the look

The eboy look is typically more popular with teens and men in their early 20s. It’s a highly trendy look that is a mishmash of style elements from K-pop, skateboarder fashion, gothic fashion, and even punk. Black skinny jeans are a cornerstone of the eboy look. You will also see T-shirts and long-sleeved shirts layered on top of button-up shirts. Sneakers are the footwear of choice. Neck chains and watches are frequent accessories for the eboy look

Emo

A teen boy with beanie, black jacket, and pants standing in an abandoned area.

The emo look is a subculture style that’s inspired by emo music. The music is characterized by dark emotions and the style attempts to capture this through fashion.

Get the look

Vintage styles and band T-shirts are a big part of the emo look. Plaid button-up shirts are popular as well. As for pants, stick to form-fitting cuts. Emo clothes typically fit close, so keep some skinny jeans handy. Dark colors, particularly black, are definitely emo.

Canvas sneakers and combat boots are popular ways to complete the emo look and finish an outfit. Stick to classic shoe styles, in keeping with the vintage-inspired emo style. Messenger bags are a popular accessory for the style. Piercings and highly stylized hair are also common emo elements, according to WikiHow.

European

Man in polo and shades walking in European city.

European clothing and American clothing are very, very different. European fashion tends to be a little more conservative and a little less casual than everyday American fashion. Wearing workout clothing is very fashionable in the U.S., for example, but this is not done in Europe. The only time yoga pants are worn in Europe is when you’re actually doing yoga.

With a few style tips, anyone can create a European look that will look totally at home on the streets of Paris.

How to get it

Avoid wearing lots of bright colors, graphics and American labels and sports team apparel. Instead, dress in more muted colors like gray, navy and black and wear simple clothing. Well-fitting slacks and jeans (known as trousers in Europe), comfortable walking shoes and a button-up shirt can take you anywhere. Add a blazer or a trench coat as needed and create a little extra flair in any outfit with a scarf.

Geek

Geek man with his hands on his waist.

Once, it was an insult to call someone a geek. Now, it’s what lots of people want to be. The geek look, also known as geek chic or geeky, has exploded into popular fashion. There are many ways to capture the geek look and be fashionable at the same time.

What you need

When you’re going for a casual geek outfit look, any graphic T-shirt that relates to geek culture will do. This can be a shirt that references any popular sci-fi or comic book franchise. For a less casual look, a classic button-up shirt in any color will work. Top your button-up with a cardigan or a sweater vest to really get that geek chic look, according to Jos. A. Bank.

Slim-fitting slacks are pretty much a must for this look. Corduroy slacks in darker hues like brown or black are truly geek chic and evoke a sexy college professor vibe.

Don’t forget the accessories. Suspenders, glasses and neckties are all go-to additions for the geek chic look. A bow tie really adds flair to a geek look. Finish the look with slip-on shoes or tennis shoes…no socks.

Glam rock

Long-haired young man with black hat sitting on a deck.

Glam rock appeared in the 1970s, when rock was becoming more stylized. So was its fashion. Glitter, makeup, leather and studs characterized the glam rock look, which became a style staple of acts like Poison and Motley Crue.

Vibrant colors, highly structured hairstyles and lots of glitter and bling add the “glam” to the glam rock look, which is built around skinny jeans, black leather jackets and tank tops.

Goth

Man in a goth outfit sitting on a concrete surface.

The goth look, also known as gothic and gothic revival, is about personal expression as much as it’s about fashion. This look embraces the dark and the macabre. Those who wear this look are often regarded as being sad.

However, the goth look is really about embracing one’s own dark side and expressing through fashion that they aren’t afraid of the darkness. Now, how can you capture the look and wear it well?

What to wear

To get the goth look, get a lot of black clothing. Black skinny jeans or leather pants with a long black trenchcoat will quickly give you a more gothic look. Black boots are a must. The shirt can be used to express anything you want.

Wear a dress shirt with ruffles to pay homage to the classic Victorian goth look, choose a black mesh shirt to honor the 1980s punk trends, or wear a graphic T-shirt representing a band or some other pop-culture element you enjoy.

The goth look is often accompanied by black hair and black makeup, even on men. Think about Jared Leto while he’s performing with 30 Seconds to Mars. Black eyeliner is a frequent accessory for gothic guys. Studded black leather wristbands and neckbands are also popular.

Grunge

Teen in a hoodie standing against a brick wall.

Where does the grunge fashion style come from? Anyone who was alive in the 1990s remembers when the grunge look and grunge music sound basically took over all of pop culture. This is when icons like Kurt Cobain reigned supreme and when flannel stretched as far as the eye could see.

But how did this trend start and how can you make it look fashionable in men’s style today?

A history of grunge

The word “grunge” has been around since the 1960s. Then, it was a popular slang word among teens to mean dirty or sloppy. But the word took on a brand-new meaning thanks to Jonathan Poneman.

He was the founder of Sub Pop, a Seattle record label. It was the late 1980s and Poneman was working wi t a stable of musicians who would soon become the stars of the music scene.

The artists on his label had a distinctly Seattle sound, music that wasn’t like anything else out there. So when he was promoting his label to local journalists, he sent out a press kit calling the sound “grunge.” Little did he know he was making both music and fashion history.

What you need

Grunge fashion was born. The look was really about going against popular fashion, dressing down instead of dressing up. The clothes had a thrift store look and sometimes even a threadbare appearance.

Hair was tousled, shirts were untucked and everyone was loving the super casual look that rebelled against the preppy, yuppie, structured looks that had flowered in fashion in the 1980s.

Marc Jacobs legitimized grunge as real fashion in 1992, when his collection captured a high-end grunge aesthetic. Ever since, designers have been playing with the look, according to Fashion Beans.

To capture grunge fashion, you really want clothing that is somewhat baggy. Large jeans, T-shirts, and flannel shirts are truly the basic uniform of grunge. Cardigan and pullover sweaters are always a great additional layer.

T-shirts, particularly T-shirts celebrating various rock bands, are a must. Ripped, worn jeans are quintessentially grunge. Skateboarding shoes often accompany the look. And if you want to be super authentic about it, don’t forget that classic chain wallet. A knit cap won’t do you any harm in grunge fashion, either.

Heavy metal

Long haired guitarist making a rock hand gesture.

Heavy metal music definitely has its own distinct look. Many types of music helped to inspire various fashion looks, such as the disco look of the 1970s, but you can’t even hear a heavy metal song without thinking about black leather, spikes and hair. That’s right. Lots and lots of hair.

The style

The heavy metal look, also known as the metal head look or metalhead, is synonymous with 1980s pop culture but this style has its roots in the late 1960s and a totally different culture of rebels. The biker style was all the rage in the 1960s, aided by hit films like “Easy Rider.”

This look inspired the early heavy metal bands of the 1970s when bands like Iron Maiden and Judas Priest wore lots of leather jackets and metal accents while performing their music on stage. They wore studded leather wrist bands, leather pants or jeans, leather jackets, and the attitude of being a badass.

Heavy metal fashion was born. The long hair was that so much in fashion in the 1980s gave the heavy metal look a somewhat different style from the more clean-cut biker style of the 1960s. Metal spikes and studs added a newer, harder edge.

Distinctly 1980s trends, such as kilts, graphic band T-shirts, ripped jeans, and a general fascination with cutting the sleeves off of shirts, gave heavy metal its own look that separated it from similar fashion trends, including punk.

The heavy metal look is still very much a part of pop fashion…though sometimes it’s a little harder to pull off that 1980s hair.

Hip hop

Group of young people in hip hop outfit posing together.

Hip hop took the music world by storm not just for the way it sounded, but also because of the way it looked. The fashion of hip hop is eye-catching and flashy by nature, bright and colorful. The look is exciting and energetic, just like the music. Also, like the music, hip hop fashion blends different style elements together to create a look that’s truly unique.

What you need

To create hip hop style, invest in some key pieces of fashion. Athletic wear, including tracksuits and sweatpants, plays a big role in hip hop fashion. Clothing that supports various sports teams, including player jerseys, are also a big part of the look.

It’s also common to blend in high-end and pretty fashion elements with the more casual features of the hip hop style. For example, many hip-hop-style icons wear tracksuits with lots of flashy jewelry like chain necklaces, wristwatches, and big rings.

Name-brand sneakers in bold colors and designers are another main feature of the look. To create a more dressed up hip hop style, wear a leather jacket over a designer T-shirt.

Hippie

A hippie in sunglasses sitting on the beach sand.

Loose, long, flowing clothing is at the heart of hippie style. This look became incredibly popular in the 1960s and left a long and lasting impression on the fashion scene. Staples from the hippie look, like bell bottoms and peasant skirts, continue to be a strong part of the style world to this day.

Get the look

Hippie fashion in the 1960s was all about loose, unstructured silhouettes, neutral colors, and natural fabrics. But the look caught on in the fashion industry and began to take on new looks. The billowy, wide pants became more shapely as bell bottoms.

The clothing became more colorful and the fabrics got finer. Today, the hippie look is typically highly stylized, well-fitted, and colorful. But the original look was very light, airy, natural, and neutral. Stick with classic elements like bell bottom and wide-leg plants, loose-fitting shirts in button-up or tunic designs, and moccasins to create this look effortlessly.

Hipster

Bearded hipster holding a cup of coffee while using his phone on the other hand.

The hipster look is absolutely everywhere and all the men’s style icons are borrowing from the trend. This is a button-up look that’s associated with youth culture and environmental consciousness. So how can you show off this style?

Get the look

If you want to look like a hipster, get some skinny jeans. Right now. Glasses are another very common feature of the look. Colorful socks, T-shirts and scarves are common style elements. Beards, particularly long beards, have become another big part of the hipster look, according to Real Men Real Style

Indie

Young man in checkered jacket sitting outdoors.

Indie movies are movies that aren’t made through a big studio and usually, without a lot of money. Indie music is the same way. It’s artists putting out music on their own, without the benefit of a well-known label. And indie fashion is a way to visually capture this spirit and this love of the indie art forms out there.

Get the look

To dress indie, forget about the fashion trends and stay away from the name-brand labels. Shop at the thrift shops and vintage stores. Stick to classic pieces and traditional looks. Mix and match different style elements. Indie is all about being an individual, so wear what you like.

Ivy League

Portrait of a man donning an Ivy League look.

The Ivy League has its own prestige and its own look. The Ivy League look, also known as ivy style, is definitely its own style and it’s one that tells the world you are conservative, educated…and probably from New England.

Get the style

Suits, slacks and blazers, striped club ties and loafers are all part of the fundamentals of the Ivy League look. Cardigans, button-up shirts and polo shirts are all staples of this style. Khaki pants and penny loafers are pretty much a requirement, according to Gentleman’s Gazette. Knit ties, herringbone jackets and school sweaters are all classic elements of Ivy League look as well. Use them to create great style.

Kodona

Man in kodona outfit sits on the street.

The kodona style comes from Japan. This is the male counterpart to the popular Lolita look, which is heavily influenced by the Victorian styles of the past. This look is built around shirts and knickerbockers that look like Victorian-era clothing. Short pants and knee socks are common elements of the look, along with top hats and newsboy caps.

Military

Masculine man wearing a military style clothes.

You probably think of camouflage patterns, combat boots, and fatigues when you think about military style. The truth is, military fashions are responsible for a huge number of items that are worn daily in men’s clothing. The military is ultimately behind crew-neck T-shirts, bomber jackets, and several different styles of boots. Wearing a military-style takes more than slipping into combat boots. When done right, military-style is highly chic.

Get the look

Classic military pieces, such as bomber jackets, cargo pants, T-shirts, and combat boots can easily create a fashionable military look. Remember to keep your shirt tucked in and your boots polished. You can also integrate camo pieces into your look. Creating a good military style is about mixing various pieces together.

Pairing skinny jeans with combat boots and an olive green tank top, for example. Add other fashion styles to your look, including some military pieces, and you’ve got military chic.

Minimalist

Man in denim polo and pants sitting on stairs outside the building.

Minimalism is a trend that has spread to all things. It has become popular in home design and in fashion, a slimming down and a toning down, an elimination of excess. The fashion of minimalism is all about sleek silhouettes, subdued colors and simple style.

Get the look

Wear a limited color palette to create a minimalist look. Wear all black and gray, all gray and navy, white and black, etc. Minimalism is about simple elegance, not flash. To that end, wear patterns only sparingly. Your clothes should fit perfectly.

You can make a minimalist look pop with small accents and details, such as a watch or a pocket square. Just remember not to add too many accessories. After all, minimalism means that less is more. A basic, unadorned men’s suit is an easy way to create a minimalist look.

Mod

Wax figures of the Beatles in Berlin.

The mod look hit the fashion scene in the 1960s, appearing first in London. This is a somewhat sleek, tailored style. The Beatles wore a mod look in their early days, setting both the music world and the fashion world on fire with their Chelsea boot styles and sleek suits.

Get the look

Wear tailored suits, polo shirts, and slim-fit trousers to create a mod look. Bold colors in classic colors like red, white, blue, and black help drive this look. Top off your mod style with a bomber jacket or parka. Low-cut dress shoes are the perfect way to finish your mod fashion. And if you really want to look mod, consider a shaggy bowl haircut and Chelsea boots.

Nautical

Man in a white polo standing on the deck of his boat.

Nautical style has been worn by many of Hollywood’s leading men and some of history’s most interesting ones. The nautical look is stylish even when you’re on dry land. Many have successfully added nautical elements to their fashion to create a great high-class look.

Get the look

Slacks, especially chinos, work well for any nautical look. White and light-colored pant styles are perfect for sunny days. Striped long-sleeved shirts, Breton shirts, are strongly associated with the nautical look. Navy blazers add another layer of style to the look. Forget socks. The nautical look is all about being sockless.

Keep most of your outfits in shades of white, blue and red and you will look truly nautical.

Normcore

Man in checkered polo sitting on a yellow pouf while he uses his laptop.

Normcore style isn’t about being original or inventive with fashion. It’s all about adopting whatever style is popular in the moment in the most uncreative, go-with-the-flow way possible. Normcore is simple and straightforward. Think turtlenecks, jeans, button-up shirts and traditional fashions and clothing styles that don’t stand out and don’t rock the boat.

Office

Businessman and businesswoman discussing work while walking.

Dress codes often vary between different office environments, so it’s hard to know how to maintain an office-ready style. But if you maintain a few key pieces and know how to put them together, you can pretty much be well-dressed enough to walk confidently into any office environment.

Get the look

One or two conservative suits in dark gray, navy or black will serve you well in any office environment. It’s a good idea to have at least one suit in your wardrobe at all times for any number of occasions that may occur.

A navy blazer will always look good in an office. It can be paired with khaki pants or gray slacks. Get several dress shirts. Neutral shades, including bright white, with minimal patterns, are best.

Always err on the conservative side when it comes to dressing for the office. Don’t want a lot of colors or patterns. Stick to solids and sedate hues and you’ll look professional, trustworthy, and experienced. A dark pullover knitted sweater adds another layer of warmth in cold weather.

Bring the look together with a belt and shoes in the same color. Choose oxfords or another dress shoe, not loafers. Wear black, brown or gray socks and avoid white and patterned socks.

If you want to express a little personality, do it with your tie. You can add a snap of color or an interesting pattern here. Just remember to keep ties office-appropriate. Silly and novelty ties are for casual gatherings, not the office.

Professional

Senior businessman texting inside the office.

Professional style, or business professional, is what you wear in a formal office environment. This is a conservative look and this is when you want to break out that “power” suit. Wear a gray or black suit, with or without pinstripes, and a crisp white dress shirt with a tie that’s not too loud.

You want to wear dress shoes and keep them polished. To stay professional, keep your hair neat and keep yourself well-groomed. Add a matching silk pocket square to really put your style over the top.

Psychedelic

A display of tie dye shirts

The hippie look originally began with neutral colors and natural fabrics, a style that wasn’t flashy or eye-catching. But in the latter half of the 1960s, fashion became a lot more colorful. The emergence of colorful pop art influenced fashion, making it much more colorful, and the psychedelic look was born.

Get the look

Bright colors and tie-dye emerged on the fashion scene with psychedelic fashion. Vivid jewel tones and royal color shades became incredibly popular. Multiple colors were mixed together. The psychedelic look is vibrant and exciting and still rooted in the silhouettes that were popular in the late 1960s and 1970s.

Punk

Punk guy wearing leather jacket, denim pants, and boots.

Punk rock put a hard edge on rock and roll, roughing up the genre and showing that it had a tough side. A side that was full of anger and energy and rebellion. The music burst onto the scene in the late 1970s, capturing the feelings of the youth. Soon enough, the punk look was catching their eyes.

Get the look

Punk was edgier than rock and so was the fashion. Ripped skinny jeans styles and T-shirts are standard staples of the punk look. If your shirt is cut up in some way, even better. Feel free to remove the sleeves, cut off the collar, get creative. If you cut too much shirt away, pin it back together with safety pins because that is super punk rock.

Leather jackets are another staple of the punk look. Converse tennis shoes and skate shoes are highly popular as well. And then, of course, there are the accessories. Chains, spikes, belts, bands, and buttons make punk rock looks pop. Don’t forget the hair. Spikes, mohawks, shaved sections, and bright colors are often used to create punk rock locks

Preppy

Men in caps and sunglasses holding golf clubs as they walk on the lawn.

The preppy look, also called the collegiate style in addition to preppie, prep or prepster style, is a truly classic trend. The look first appeared in the early 1900s and it has never really gone away entirely. Capturing the preppy look can be a little tricky. Master a few classic combinations and you’ll pull it off every time.

Get the style

If you’re going to wear the preppy look, you’re going to want some sweaters. V-necks and crew necks over collared shirts and neckties or tied around the shoulders are quintessentially preppy. Cardigans are also classic. And for those super chilly days, cable knit sweaters look just great. Of course, there’s never a wrong time to add that preppy classic: the sweater vest.

Light blue button-up shirts and crisp white dress shirts should fill your drawers if you’re going to dress preppy. Light blue shirts are for those more casual occasions and the weekend. White is for the office and evenings out. When you need to be casual, slip into a polo shirt. If you’re going to dress in a preppy style, you’re going to be wearing collared shirts pretty much all of the time.

Don’t forget a couple of blazers in gray and navy blue, not to mention the chinos, khakis, and slacks you want in your closet. Don’t shy away from colors or patterns. Stripes, polka dots, and vibrant colors are all great when you’re heading out for the night, going to an event, or attending any gathering.

Loafers, oxfords and boat shoes are a perfect finish for the preppy look

Rave

Group of friends sitting on couch in nightclub during rave party.

Raves are party-like gatherings where people get together to dance and listen to music, typically accompanied by multicolored lights. And this activity has spawned its own very distinct fashion. If you want you fit in at a rave, you’re going to need to know what to wear to capture rave style. According to iHeartRaves, there are few items that are must-haves.

What you need

Small beaded bracelets strung together with candy-colored plastic beads are all the rage at raves. These bracelets are worn and traded among ravers. They’re known as Kandi, and you definitely want to have some if you’re going to be raving.

Keep your clothing lightweight, so you can dance in it, and colorful so it fits the general theme of the rave style. Vivid, bright colors like yellow, pink, purple, blue, and green are perfect. Starry patterns and graphic images are common.

Stick to T-shirts, shorts, and tank tops so you can stay cool. If you need extra layers going into the rave, slip into a sweatsuit and take it off once inside. You can store it in your backpack, another common sight at raves.

Don’t forget sneakers, because you need shoes you can dance in. Sunglasses are a common rave accessory. Because raves often include laser shows, you want to shield your eyes.

Rockabilly

Man in a rockabilly outfit holding a portable radio.

Rockabilly came to fame thanks to performers like Elvis and Jerry Lee Lewis, who popularized the style. The look lasted and is a still-seen fashion style that’s worn today. if you want to give this look a try, there are a few key pieces you’re going to need.

By the way, rockabilly looks often include big hair, such as pompadour styles.

The psychobilly style is a punk-infused version of the rockabilly look. This is a sort of rougher rockabilly look that often includes spiky hair. Cut the sleeves off your jackets, add some studded jewelry and adopt a tougher attitude to capture psychobilly.

The rockabilly look is very much like the Teddy boy style, which appeared in England in the 1950s. This style is built around skinny pants, bright socks, button-up shirts, and fitted jackets.

Rocker

A rocker jumps while playing his guitar.

A rocker style, or rock style, is a classic look with roots in the 1950s and the early days of rock and roll. Like the music, the style has gone through many changes over the years. Early rock and roll ultimately inspired sounds and looks like punk rock, heavy metal, glam rock and rockabilly. But the classic rocker style has its own distinct look, too.

Get the look

A plain white T-shirt and tight-fitting distressed denim jeans immediately create that cool, rocker rebel vibe that famous heartthrobs like James Dean wore so well. You can add more interest to the look by upgrading to a graphic T or a band T-shirt. Add a button-up flannel or denim collared shirt when you need an extra layer.

Don’t forget the classic Converse, cowboy boots or skate sneakers. For a classic rocker look, you don’t need a lot of accessories or extras. Think Bruce Springsteen and other classic rock and rollers who needed nothing but their attitude to stand out.

Rugged

Bearded man in rugged polo and pants sitting on a bench.

Rugged style is about looking sort of tough, ready for anything. Men who wear a rugged style aren’t afraid to get their hands dirty. They spit. And they can change the tire on a car. You know who the rugged men are: movie icons like John Wayne, Steve McQueen, and Liam Neeson. Now, how can you look more like one of them?

Get the look

Rugged style isn’t fussy, it’s functional. You should wear clothes that fit well and give you a full range of motion, so nothing tight or form-fitting. That means no skinny jeans. Wear tough fabric like denim and cotton and twill. This is a simple style without a lot of excesses. Jeans or tweed slacks, henley and flannel shirts, wool coats, and boots are the hallmarks of the rugged look.

Get the look

This look says that you don’t actually care about fashion and therefore, you are above all of that. Style icons for this look include Pete Davidson, who came to fame as a cast member on SNL, according to Fashion Beans. Semi-Formal

Man in a semi-formal clothes standing against vintage wall.

Semi-formal is a dress code that is often listed on invitations to weddings and other special events. This is an in-between that exists in the middle of formal wear, such as a tuxedo, and casual wear, like a pair of slacks and a polo shirt. And because there’s a lot of room between those two looks, the semi-formal style can be one of the hardest of all to capture.

Get the look

A dark suit with a dress shirt should look great for any semi-formal event. It’s usually a good idea to wear a tie, but if you plan on wearing a vest the combination of the two can make you look over-done.

Get a more laid-back semi-casual look by forgoing the tie and wearing the suit with a matching vest. Unbutton the top button or two of your dress shirt and you’ve got a relaxed, somewhat sexy semi-formal style. You can also pair a dress pant style with a vest and a button-down shirt.

Remember dark socks and dress shoes, no loafers. A nice watch, tie clip and cufflinks can always be added to finish off the look.

Ska

Man in a ska outfit walks down the Moscow street.

Skater style started out as a functional look. The baggy clothing makes it easy to skate in and even provided extra protection during falls, slips, slides and skids. Baggy, oversized jeans and T-shirts are must-haves for the skateboarding look.

Skate shoes, low-cut tennis shoes, finish the look. Baggy shorts, especially cargo shorts, are seen often. Ball caps and button-down shirts, worn open, are commonly added. But the main item of all skater styles is surely the hoody. Wear it a little bit baggy and you’ll be wearing the quintessential skater item.

Steampunk

Man in steampunk style clothes poses on the road.

You’ve probably heard of or seen steampunk style before. This style s seen frequently in movies, TV shows, and cosplay, but some people actually wear steampunk-inspired looks in their daily lives. You may have all sorts of reasons why you want to wear a steampunk look. And when you do, you’ll need a few items in order to really make a great steampunk style happen.

You can create a steampunk outfit pretty easily with a suit, an embellished vest, and an ascot. Dress boots are the best way to finish off this look.

Really dress the part by wearing a vest made of silk or velvet, because vests made in luxury materials were quite common in Victorian times. On colder and wetter days, slip into a trench coat.

Stilyagi

A man wearing a zoot suit with hat and leather shoes.

Stilyagi was much more than a fashion style, though it definitely was that. This was an entire movement in the Soviet Union that rebelled against the status quo and attempted to do what was impossible at the time: express individuality. The word stilyagi was actually used as a derogatory remark but today, this style still paints a picture of life during a specific time in a specific place, and how fashion played a huge role.

The look

From the 1940s to the 1960s in the Soviet Union, the stilyagi look became a statement of self. Stilyagi translates literally into stylish, but it carries a negative connotation – much like the word “dandy” in English.

This look revolved around zoot suit styles in bright colors, often in checkered patterns and made with big shoulder pads. The pants were tight and the jackets long. The suits were paired with equally bright shoes and shirts.

Bright colors and Western-inspired fashions were very much against the Communist-ran government’s ideas of style at the time. The stilyagi look was used to represent a break from the Communist government and a desire for individualism, sentiments that resonated strongly at the time.

Surfer

Man riding on a skate while holding surfboard.

Surfer style, also known as surf style, has changed a lot over the years as the fashions of the day have changed. Surfing became known to most of the world in the early 1900s but actually, this activity is centuries old. The style is quite a bit more modern than that, however.

Get the look

The first written record of surfing dates to 1767, when Europeans discovered it while on an expedition to Tahiti. It’s believed that surfing has ancient roots, however, dating to pre-Incan tribes. Surf fashion is and has always been about function and comfort over style. After all, you need to move effectively to surf.

Chunky sweaters and knit caps are just what you need when the weather is chilly. Under this, wear tank tops and T-shirts so you can remove layers when needed. Flip flops and high-quality sunglasses are common accessories.

Board shorts are undoubtedly the most common bottoms in surf fashion, according to Surfd

Vintage

Man in vintage look wearing white suit and glasses.

Vintage means something from the past and that’s exactly what vintage style is. It’s fashions from the past, menswear worn by generations before you. To be true vintage clothing, the styles have to be at least 20 years old.

However, the clothes do not have to be. Brand-new clothing made in older styles is vintage, too. If it’s a style from before the 2000s, it’s vintage! Any styles that are 100 years or older are antique and no longer vintage. You can also call vintage fashion retro fashion.

Yuppie

Man in black suit and tie sitting on a luxury chair.

The yuppie look is strongly associated with 1980s culture but lately, this once-forgotten fashion trend has been informing today’s styles. The classic yuppie look was built around conservative chic fashion.

Power suits with pinstripe dress shirts and fancy ties, suspenders, highly polished shoes, and slicked-back hair were very much a part of the yuppie look. Name-brand labels and the briefcase are practically essential for yuppie fashion.

White Tie

Man in white tie dress standing against the floral backdrop.

The white tie dress code is reserved strictly for the most formal vents. This would be your red carpet occasions, your incredibly important parties, high-end weddings, and anything else super, super fancy. Expect to wear a tuxedo with tails and a vest or waistcoat, a tuxedo shirt, dress shoes, and a bow tie. Yes, the bow tie will usually be white. This dress code may also be listed as tails or dress suits

According to GQ, cufflinks are a necessity. You can also add a pocket square and/or boutonniere.

FAQs

There’s a lot to know about style and you may still have a lot of questions about the different fashions. Get the answers to the most common style questions and you can dress like a pro.

How many types of fashion styles are there?

Menswear fashion is constantly changing. Designers and trendsetters are coming up with new looks all the time and drawing inspiration from all sorts of places. There have been many different styles over the years and there are styles out there right now just waiting to catch on.

It’s impossible to know how many fashion styles there are at any given moment…but there are definitely enough styles to keep you in different looks for a pretty long time!

What makes a man stylish?

What’s the secret of being stylish? Is there a trick to creating eye-catching looks and putting together a stylish outfit for every occasion? There are some things that men need to do in order to be stylish. However, it’s probably not the stuff you’re thinking.

You don’t need to have a collection of expensive suits or silk ties to look stylish. You don’t have to fill your closet with designer labels. Capturing style is actually simpler than that.

Men's accessories over a wooden table.

How can you look stylish every day? To be stylish, follow these general tips:

  1. Maintain your clothing. Don’t wear anything that is ripped or frayed or has holes in it. If it’s unraveling or damaged, it’s time to get rid of that item. You can hold onto something for sentimental value and you should definitely keep some old work clothes handy, but don’t wear these items out in public. Wear only clothing that is clean, well-maintained, and free of visible signs of wear and tear. The only exception to this, of course, is distressed pants, jackets, and shirts that are meant to look worn. Fashion is strange, sometimes.
  2. Make sure it fits. The most important aspect of what you wear isn’t how it looks. It’s how it fits. Every single item you wear should fit well. Prioritize a good fit every time because this is truly going to help you look and feel your best. If you don’t feel comfortable, you won’t be stylish.
  3. Keep yourself well-groomed. Get regular haircuts and keep your facial hair neat and trimmed. Pay attention to your personal hygiene. Take showers and wear cologne to keep yourself smelling nice. Use the product on your, like pomade, as needed to keep your hairstyle looking good. Curly hair and long hairstyles may take a little extra time, as compared to other men’s hairstyle options. Some men style their beard, too, and keep up a strong beard style game.
  4. Follow the trends. Pay attention to menswear style trends. Follow popular celebrities on Instagram to see what they’re wearing and get outfit ideas. Even if you don’t buy the designer label prices, you can wear similar items and copy the styles you see.
  5. Build a classic wardrobe. It’s a good idea to follow the trends, but you also want to maintain a wardrobe containing several solid, classic choices. The simple suit, for example, is an enduring style staple that every stylish man needs.
  6. Keep your footwear clean. Your shoes should be cleaned and when necessary, polished. When your shoes become visibly scuffed and worn, get a new pair. People often look at shoes first, so it’s important to make a good impression on yours.

What are the most unique fashion styles for men?

A unique style is one that stands out from the crowd, which can happen for several reasons. You may wear a menswear style that was once popular but isn’t now, which makes you very unique because it’s unlikely that anyone else will be wearing that style.

However, you can just as easily turn heads by wearing a pirate costume. Anything that is out of the ordinary is unique and unusual. Look for a style that you don’t see others wearing in your local area, and you’ll see what’s unique for where you live.

What are the different dress codes?

Specific dress codes are frequently listed on invitations. They’re also used for country clubs and some places of business. It’s important to know what the dress codes are and how to follow them.

Casual dress is a common dress code. Khakis, jeans, T-shirts and other types of shirts are all acceptable for this dress code. Just be sure to wear clothing that is clean and well-maintained, with no holes or rips.

Dressy casual means you should wear slacks, a collared shirt and maybe a blazer. Business casual is essentially the same as dressy casual, but you can’t wear sneakers with business casual attire and a blazer is a really great idea. Business formal wear is conservative and professional. This look requires a dark business suit, dress shoes, a dress shirt and a tie, according to Emily Post

Festival attire is a fairly confusing dress code that you may see from time to time. What’s that supposed to mean? Well, in most cases it means that you should wear slacks with a collared shirt, either open or with a themed tie, and a blazer. When in doubt, just ask the host or hostess of the event for more details about the dress code.

Semi-formal wear is a little more formal than office wear but it’s not quite formal wear. Semi-formal wear may also be called cocktail attire. Wear a dark business suit with or without a matching vest, a dress shirt, a tie, and dress shoes with dark dress socks

Black tie optional can feel like a bit of a trap. Is it really optional? Well…not really. The black-tie optional dress code means that you are asked to wear a tuxedo but you can get away with a dark suit if you must. You should wear it with a tie and a dress shirt, along with dress shoes and dark socks. The option is the tie you wear…which should be conservative and not too flashy or loud.

A creative black tie means you can play a little more with your look. You should still wear a tuxedo, of course, but you can feel free to wear a colorful dress shirt, a patterned tie, a cummerbund, or a decorated vest

Black tie and white tie are very formal styles where a tuxedo is required. You want to dress to the fullest for these dress codes. You want cufflinks, a pocket square, a bow tie, a vest, shiny dress shoes and a tuxedo shirt. This is the time to get out your best watch and jewelry.

Which fashion style is right for you?

The fashion style you choose to wear should be based on multiple factors. First, what do you like that wear? What clothing do you feel most confident in? You should also consider the message you want to send to the world. Your clothing says a lot about you. Are you trendy? Professional? Sporty? Your clothing can tell others the answers to these questions.

Male models in trench coats walk the runway.

If you want to create an image of being powerful and successful, your style should lean more toward business formal and business casual looks. Away from work, a preppy style or Ivy League look will help you maintain that image during recreational activities.

If you are more laid back, a casual style will suit you best. You can choose a style that mirrors your personality. If you are somewhat anti-establishment and a bit of a rebel, a punk rock or biker look may suit you best. The fashion style that’s right for you is the one that makes you feel the most like yourself. It’s the one that gives you confidence. And it’s the one that makes you look the way you want the world to see you.

Which type of wool is best for suits?

Wool is considered by many to be one of the top suit fabrics. It’s very common for suits to be made from wool. However, there are many different types of wool. Some types of wool are known for durability, while others are known for being soft. What kind of wool should you be looking for in a suit?

Merino wool is considered to be a highly versatile wool. This is a good all-occasion material because it’s breathable but still retains some warmth in cold weather. Tweed is a hard-wearing type of fabric, while cashmere wool is known more for its fine quality than its toughness.

According to Man of Many, suits made from wool are extremely long-lasting and look nice for many years.

How much should you spend on clothes?

Are you spending too much on your wardrobe? How much should you pay for clothes? According to Business Insider, you should spend around five percent of your budget on clothing. To find out how much that is, take the amount of money you earn in one month and multiply it by 0.05.

The number you get is how much you should be spending on your clothing per month. You may choose to shop once or twice a year, rather than every month. Either way, this is a good guideline to follow.

How can you make your outfits look expensive?

Celebrities wear designer labels, spending thousands of dollars on their clothing. And sometimes, they intentionally style themselves with clothing that’s distressed and worn-looking. So who’s to say what expensive clothing looks like?

You don’t need designer labels to get an outfit that looks like it cost a lot of money. With a few tips, you can make your outfits look like they’re expensive even when your clothes are super affordable. Get creative and you can hack fashion for men to make it really work for you.

Start with clothing that fits well everywhere. Begin with undergarments that fit perfectly. If there are any undergarments that don’t fit your body well, you could end up with gapping, bulging, pinching and other issues that make your body look unattractive and make you feel uncomfortable.

All of your clothes should fit perfectly so they look tailored to your body, even underwear. This will immediately make them look more expensive. Strive for an absolutely perfect fit and alter items as needed to get it.

Choose good fabrics. Silk and cashmere are known to be expensive but you could go broke trying to get a wardrobe with items made from these materials. Instead, choose clothes made in materials that are affordable but have a high-quality, expensive look to them. Linen, faux leathers and premium cotton all look really great and feel nice to the touch but they’re all very affordable materials.

Invest in accessories. If you get one designer item, such as a watch, it will elevate your entire outfit. A pair of designer sunglasses or shoes has the same effect.

Cheat! If you want clothing that looks expensive, hit the thrift shops. With a little digging, you can often find a couple of designer items that are gently used. And once a designer item is a couple of years old, it suddenly becomes retro and therefore, it’s stylish all over again. You can sometimes find designer shirts, pants, suits and ties hiding in thrift shops.

What are the best ways to improve style?

There are many ways to improve style without spending a lot of money. By simply learning to sew, you can extend the life of your clothes and improve your look, according to GQ. Try changing out the buttons on your shirts and blazers.

Buttons are cheap but they can make a huge difference in your style. Get buttons with logos on them from fabric or craft stores to elevate your look. This is a great little trick to improve fashion for men affordably.

A display of men's clothing.

Replace the laces in your shoes to give them a pop of color. Get rid of the standard white, brown or black laces and replace them with a bold, colorful pair. Little details like this stand out and make a difference. Better still, laces are cheap!

Add patches to worn-out denim you can’t let go. Those well-loved jeans and jackets can be patched to give them a cool look. Tear up old T-shirts, other denim that’s beyond all hope and any fabric you can find to create patches that will give your old jeans and jackets a whole new look.

Shine your leather and vinyl shoes and clean up your sneakers. Simply by keeping your shoes looking nice, you’ll keep yourself looking stylish.

By paying attention to detail, you can elevate your look and stand out as a stylish person who takes care of their clothing.

Are watches an attractive accessory?

Men don’t really get a ton of jewelry options. It’s not always easy for a man to pull off a diamond choker the way a woman can, or rock a string of pearls. But men can wear watches and look totally on point with their fashion.

Watches look great when they’re well-matched with the rest of your ensemble. Wear a good-looking watch and you’ll get a lot of attention and compliments, according to Real Men Real Style.

A watch can also be a way for you to express your personal style and say something about yourself. Are you a Roman numeral guy? You might have a more classic style or conservative personality if you’re drawn to watches with this feature.

Do you prefer lots of buttons and dials and cool features? Maybe you’re a bit of a geek at heart. There’s always a watch that can capture your style. And when you have on a watch that means something to you, it’s always an attractive addition to your look.

What color will look most attractive on you?

There’s a whole science of color that says that certain colors can affect mood. They can draw forth specific feelings. Many believe that colors have meaning. For example, many people associate white with purity and goodness. Yellow often evokes a feeling of happiness. So which color should you wear to present yourself at your most attractive?

According to one study cited by the New Zealand Herald, red is the color that’s considered to be most attractive to both men and women. Dressing in red indicates that you are a powerful, dominant person to women, while men are sexually excited by the color.

Love To Know consulted multiple studies to determine that women find red, purple, black, and blue to be extremely attractive colors. Women also find themselves attracted to men who wear a color that matches their eyes. Orange and brown, however, do not get cited as attractive colors.

Even so, the rules of fashion dictate that you should choose colors based on your own natural undertone. While there are many different shades of skin, all skin colors have either a cool or warm undertone. Find out which one you are and you’ll know which colors will naturally flatter you.

Look at the inside of your wrist. If your veins look bluish or purplish, you have a cool undertone. You should dress in pastels, greens, blues, purples and metallics. Anything in the gray or blue color family will look good on you. If your veins are more green or yellow, you have a warm undertone and you should dress in reds, pinks, yellows and earth tones. You’ll look good in shades of brown and other warm colors.

How can you make your style stand out?

It’s not always easy to stand out from the crowd. Lots of men’s fashion is sort of similar. It’s a lot of button-up shirts, suits and ties. So what can you do to make your style stand out?

Man wearing shades, black coat, and plaid polo.

Look for pants with texture. According to Real Men Real Style, opt for pants made with corduroy, twill, and other textured fabrics rather than standard jeans. This is the more uncommon choice and therefore, stands out a little bit more.

Invest in interesting shoes. Get a custom pair of shoes or scour vintage shops to find something that’s a bit different. Unique shoes will definitely help you to stand out from a crowd.

Make your style pop with your accessories. You can show off a little bit of your own unique personality with your belt and belt buckle. Your watch can say a lot about you, too. A pocket square, a ring, there are many small details you can add that are very much unique to you.

Should you tuck in…or let your shirt hang out?

To tuck or not to tuck? This is the age-old question that has haunted men for years. But there is actually a very simple trick to determining whether or not a shirt should be tucked in, according to Business Insider

If the shirt has a flat bottom hem, it’s supposed to be worn untucked and hanging out. But if the shirt has tails, which means that the hem doesn’t have a consistent length, you’re supposed to keep it tucked in. Follow this simple rule and you will never go wrong with a tucked or untucked shirt.

How should you dress for success?

There are many ways you can dress to look more successful, which is known to be a pretty surefire way of creating more success in your life. Start with the fashion fundamentals. This means always wearing dark socks if you’re wearing dark pants and/or shoes, according to Forbes. You should also always match your belt to your shoes.

Wear cologne, but not too much. Remember that it’s just an accent.

Always keep your clothing clean and wrinkle-free. You can hang clothes up in the bathroom while you’re showing to steam them and freshen them up.

Keep accessories at a minimum. They’re meant to be just a little pop, so don’t overdo it. You don’t want accessories that are too big or showy. Keep it elegant.

Most important of all, be confident. Stand and walk tall. Know your worth. When you are confident, it will show. Others will find it easier to trust you and will be more naturally drawn to you. They will be more likely to look to you for leadership if you are confident, and leaders are successful people.

What are the key pieces every man should have in their closet?

Build a basic wardrobe and you can be prepared for just about any social or business function that life may present you with. Once you’ve got the fundamentals, you can start playing around with your style and do even more with your look.

Start with the shirts. There will be many occasions when you need a white button-up shirt, according to Esquire. This is a truly all-occasion shirt that can be dressy or casual, depending on what you wear it with.

You should also have a pale blue button-up shirt, a great go-to item for business or casual wear. You also need to have a few plain white T-shirts in standard short sleeve styles. You should always wear one under your dress shirts as an undershirt and it’s perfect as a standalone shirt with your jeans and casual slacks.

Slim-fitting chinos can help you go anywhere. These versatile pants are creat for business, casual or semi-formal looks. You should also have a pair of nice wool or flannel slacks. These pants will work beautifully for business looks and more formal outfits. Of course, you need a pair of jeans that fit well. Jeans look good and feel good and they work for just about any casual occasion.

A dark blue suit is always handy to have whenever you need a business look or an outfit for an evening out. This is perfect semi-formal wear. You also want to keep a black suit on hand for more formal affairs, such as weddings and funerals. Make sure you have a few silk ties to go with your suits. Gray, dark blue and ruby red are all versatile tie colors that work in multiple settings.

As for shoes, you want at least one pair of plain low-cut sneakers, a good pair of dress shoes and some in-between shoes, like a pair of loafers.

For additional layers, you want to have at least one navy blazer in your closet. This is a perfect topper for many casual, business casual and semi-formal looks. A bomber jacket works for casual looks. And in fall and winter, a trench coat is a handsome way to finish off your professional looks.

How can you look more grown up?

People say that the world favors the young but this is not always the case in professional environments. You may find yourself being underestimated or not taken very seriously in your professional life because you have a youthful appearance. But with the right style, you can make yourself look more sophisticated and experienced.

First, forget the T-shirts and sweatshirts. Though older men do wear these items all the time, on the young these things just look…well, young. Don’t wear sneakers unless you’re actively engaging in an athletic activity. Sneakers are associated with youth culture, rightly or wrongly. A pair of lace-up oxfords or loafers will help you look a bit more mature.

You should also avoid logos, even for sports teams. Stick to clothing that isn’t graphic or brightly colored. Choose a more sedate color palette and clothing made in simple patterns and solids.

Cut your hair in a classic style. You can easily make yourself look older with a haircut. Long hairstyle looks and man buns are going to make you seem younger, according to Gentleman’s Gazette. Stick to short hair in neater styles that are associated with maturity rather than youth. A fade haircut, for example, is seen mainly on younger men.

You can also grow out some facial hair, which has an aging effect, cover up tattoos and take out any visible piercings. A pair of glasses can also make your face look more mature.

How can men dress sexier?

What looks sexy on a man? It can be difficult for men to capture an outfit style that’s sexy without looking inappropriate. After all, there aren’t many places where you can walk around in a muscle shirt without getting strange looks.

According to research from Real Men Real Style, women like men in a classic black leather jacket. Considering that some of history’s most famous male sex symbols, like James Dean and Johnny Depp, have worn leather jackets, this makes sense. Choose a quality jacket that fits well to bring out your sexiness.

A nice-fitting tweed suit also turns women on. Tweed has an elegant look to it and a little texture, which gives the suit a tactile, touchable look.

Men’s Health found that women enjoy a fitted T-shirt in basic black. Women also spoke up for the classic henley when it comes to men’s shirts.

Men’s hair has always played a big role in style throughout history. At certain points in history, a man’s haircut could speak for his status in life, where he came from, even which way he leaned politically. During the English Revolution, for example, haircuts could show whether a man supported the King or wanted to abolish the monarchy. In other words, a man’s haircut can be a pretty big deal. So which styles are the most popular?

In ancient days, men often wore their hair very short. This was a common practice in Egypt for thousands of years and the Romans famously wore short hairstyles that were brushed forward to create a fringe of bangs across the forehead.

Longer hairstyles didn’t catch on until after the fall of the Roman empire, around 450. During this time, longer hair became a status symbol. This was popular for more than a thousand years. It wasn’t until the 1900s that shorter hairstyles became trendy again.

Hairstyles became more stylized in the 1900s thanks to looks like the pompadour, which came to fame in the 1950s. Slicked-back hairstyles were everywhere in the 1980s.

Now, almost anything goes when it comes to hair. Shaggy, side-part and buzz-cut hairstyles are still incredibly popular.

What is the easiest haircut to maintain?

The buzzcut is an easy hairstyle to maintain because you can do it yourself with an electric shaver. You don’t need a barber or any help, just a mirror and a razor. However, you will need to trim your buzz cut often. Maintenance is easy with this cut, but it is frequent.

The classic crew cut can also be done at home but it does take a little more finesse. Use different lengths on an electric razor to create this cut. It can be difficult to get a straight cut alone, so you may want to get some help to make this one perfect.

The taper cut has become increasingly popular lately, according to TrendSpotter. The hair is short around the neck and then gets longer as it goes up toward the crown. Styling this look is easy and even as it grows out, this style still looks pretty good for a while.

The easiest haircut to maintain may just be the shaved head. Because all you have to do here is shave your head bald, you don’t spend any time grooming and styling your hair. This is a huge timesaver in the long run.

What color attracts the human eye?

Certain colors are more visible or attention-getting than others. According to Sciencing, the colors green, yellow and blue draw the eye the most during daylight hours. Yellow is the most visible color when it’s dark out, and the most likely to draw the eye.

What should you wear on casual Friday?

Many professional environments have a casual Friday once a week or once a month. This can be a fun way to loosen up a little and enjoy more comfortable clothing at the office. However, every business has its own policy when it comes to casual Friday. To know what to wear, you need to check the policy. Often, casual Friday means that you can switch to khakis or casual pants, rather than the usual suit, but jeans often aren’t allowed.

Usually, you can forgo the tie on casual Friday. However, you’ll probably still need to wear a collared shirt, rather than a T-shirt or crew neck. Check with your supervisor to find out exactly what is and is not appropriate.

How much should you spend on a suit?

A really nice suit can cost thousands of dollars…but lots of people can’t afford to spend thousands of dollars on a suit. However, you can get a nice suit that looks good for about $300 to $600. Check the quality of a suit by checking the fabric. Look at the label to see exactly what you’re getting.

Also, feel the fabric with your fingers. Test how heavy it feels by lifting up the sleeves. Feel the lining of the suit as well and check it to see how it looks. The lining is an indicator of the quality of the suit, according to Men’s Health.
